Maple Krenov style meets ?

Okly dokly here is the project I was making for the “Maple” contest for Fine woodworking magazine. The challenge was to take 17’ of maple hardwood and make a project out of it. So everything on this cabinet was out of one board that was 12/4×6 ish by whatever.

I resawed everything to it’s thicknesses. Obviously I jointed everything and then planed it to final thickness. The legs go from the floor (doy) to the top of the box. They don’t stop at the bottom of it. They are glued to the dovetailed box. If that makes sense. They flair forward and to the sides. The carving is seperate from the “arms” holding it and is grooved into it. Then shaped together to make it look seamless. The “arms” are mortised into the back. The doors are not flat. They are hand planed into a curve and shaped to fit the box. They are bookmatched. This presented a finishing problem because I used Die stain and didn’t seal the wood prior to staining. So right door seems darker then the left but if you turn them over they are perfect. I may try to darken the left door to match but then I will need to darken the entire cabinet. Arrgghh. The hinges are Brusso Knife hinges. I don’t know what I want to do for handles. If I make them I plan on using the remnants of the board so I stay on track with the one board theme.
This piece isn’t perfect but I’m proud of it. Especially the fact that I got one rough board and this is what it became.

Picture of doors matching. The doors can’t be flipped because of their shape. It’s a bummer.

As always I look for criticism positive or negative. If you see something you don’t like say so. I don’t mind. Your remarks good or bad will aid me in becoming better at what I do. Thanks for looking.

Very Nice cabinet. Its almost hard to believe that all came from one board. Sounds like a fun challenge.

Really amazing to see a photo of the board next to a photo of the finished piece, Fantastic!

Impressive!
I agree w/tinnman65, it’s hard to believe all of this came from one board, excellent effort on your part.

From an overall design/aesthetics perspective – I know why you built it with the mirror attached (for the contest), but something about the way the mirror sinks into the main box . . . . Maybe it’s just the way the photos were taken but it looks somehow fat in the middle, if that makes any sense (?).

My first impression was – “wish the mirror, with it’s great carving, was separate from the great looking and well proportioned cabinet”. Maybe that’s what it is, the way the mirror sinks into the box – to my eye – seems to be somehow throwing off the balance or proportions of the cabinet. Or maybe if the top of the mirror, where the carving is was wider (?) I can somehow see it better as a separate cabinet, with awesome tapered and curved legs, supporting a well proportioned box – accompanied by an oval mirror with very nice floral relief carving, hung on the wall just a few inches above the cabinets top.

Truthfully, it might just be the photos. Its a great piece and maybe in person where one could step back and get a better “holistic” view of the proportions, none of what I just said above would mean a #$%@.

Okay, so I changed the first pic. (I had to change them all garsh darn it). I did this to give a picture of the overal cabinet. The main pic before was taken from a low angle to show the color change in the door. I didn’t have a good picture from a distance. The total height of this piece is around 6’ 6”. I could measure but that is a lot of work right now as my tape is in the garage and my butt is in a chair. So it’s quite possible that I could get measurements tomorrow at some point. One of the hard parts about this build was the size of the board I originally got. It was very heavy. I had to have help laying it down so I could cut it down to more manageable pieces. Running the larger pieces through the bandsaw to resaw them was tough because of their length and weight. Once Some of the weight was off it was easy going. Thanks for the comments.

AH! Much better, this first picture truly does the piece justice. From this shot the proportions of the overall piece with the mirror don’t look distorted like in the other photo. Very nice!

Look forward to seeing it in FWW! Good luck with the contest. Make sure you send in the good pic’s. lol.

Unfortunately the contest was for last year. I got to a certain point on the piece and missed the deadline. So it just sat there unfinished until now. One of these days I’ll get something into the magazine. I think I need to work on my photography skills first. LOL.

Hi Kolwdwkwr;

Great cabinet. Too bad you missed the deadline.

That color problem when book matching maple is irritating.

Even spraying a clear finish, the results differ enough to bother me.

There are a few woods where this is more obvious than others.

Looks good though.

Impressive piece….......... that piece should have been in FWW magazine. I like the overall looks of this piece and I like the mirror. It doesn’t look like you could get that all out of one piece of lumber….....amazing.

Kolwdwkwr, It is a beauty, I cant see how you got that out of one board, I would need sever board and still would not get nothing like that out of them. very good build.

Beautiful work, love the cabinet, especiallly the door handle, LOL.
Is it me, the camera or a design aspect, but does the mirror and upper arms bend to the right? I have been working long hours this past week and am pretty tired, so am not sure if my eyes are deceiving me or not.
Also, did you hand cut the dovetails?
Thanks for sharing.
