Here’s my latest project, a Pennsylvania Spice Cabinet I made for my Daughter as a Wedding Gift. The photo quality is not too good but you get the idea. It was a very challenging project and as my nickname indicates I made a lot of “Woodscrap” in the process. She likes it though and that’s what counts. Thanks for looking.

That’s a beautiful piece of work! Excellent detailed half doves! How long did it take you to complete, start to finish?

A beautiful piece. Keep up this kind of work and you will be making less “woodscrap.”

Thanks. I spent the better part of almost every weekend for three months on it. When she came home from school to visit on some weekends I would have to hide it from her and couldn’t work on it.

Really nice, great workmanship. If you can do that, you can build most anything I’d expect.

What woods involved? Finish? Any construction notes such as special techniques or problems?
It’s lovely, and I like the design and concept!

The cabinet itself is Mahogany with an ash back. The drawers are maple. It has a false back with two hidden compartments. The finsh is red mahogany stain and hand rubbed satin poly. The biggest challenge was all the dovetails. Most, except for the long sides of the drawers had to be hand cut (hours and hours….). It was a challenging project but a lot of fun as well. If I wasn’t trying to get it done in time for a wedding it would have been more fun. In the end I was 2 weeks late but it was done enough to let her see it.
The project and plans were featured in Fine Woodworking Magazine.

Very nice! Is this from the plans Steve Latta published in Fine Woodworking in early 2007? I’ve been considering tackling this project myself.

Paul, Yes it’s Steve Latta’s design. The detail drawings you can buy are very helpful.

Looks like you picked up Steve Lattas’ plans from FWW. Very nice! I did one very similar from those plans as well, and it was a challenge. Nice job

Superb execution of this cabinet. I can’t tell from the photos, did you do the line and berry inlay on the front door? I have always wanted to try that.

No, I passed on the inlay. I felt that was beyond my skills at this point and I was tight on time. Maybe when I make another cabinet for my Wife.

Nice work. Are all the dividers rounded over or did you add beading? Either way, nice touch.
Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful! I assume this means you live in Pennsylvania? Do you do any other custom work? I need something made that would be simpler than this. I can send you a picture if your interested.

Sorry I guess I didn’t realize there was such a thing as a “pennsylvania spice cabinet”. And you obviously don’t live in Pennsylvania. Next time I’ll check things out a little more before I show my blond side.LOL
