Cherry bed

This is an arts & crafts/mission style bed out of cherry. These nightstands were built to match. I like the look of the cherry and particularly the change in color and pattern from heart to sapwood. I haven’t had any issues using both. Were I to do it over, I’d match all of the slats from the heartwood, because after finishing, the sapwood ones stick out because they didn’t darken. The plans were from an old Woodsmith article. Finish was a wiping varnish and several coats of water based polyurethane. I later came back and rubbed out the tops of the head and foot boards. It is solid, but tends to rack just a bit. I can correct this, I believe if I go back and fasten the boards underneath the mattress. Loose now, I could dovetail into place to keep the entire bed completely square. Alternatively I could bolt or screw them, but that just seems like the wrong thing to do.

This is a really nice looking bed. You have combined two of my woodworking passions in this piece. Cherry is my favorite wood and I enjoy the looks of arts and crafts furniture. I like the contrast that sapwood gives cherry as well. If you eliminate it, at least to me, the piece looks monochromatic. Giving it contrast with the sapwood adds visual appeal to the project.

Well done. I enjoyed looking at this project.

That bed looks very familiar. I built one exactly like it using those same plans 9 years ago. I used hard maple. Nice job! They also produced plans for matching nightstands and a dresser but I never got around to building those.

Nice looking bed. Great job!
I will be making one soon but will stick with QSWO (my favorite) since I have used it in almost everything I have made for my wife and I recently.

Have your say...
