The double bed was completed in 1979. It was totally hand carved (except the bedposts) according to my personal interpretation of the Portuguese style “Dom Joao V” (Baroque style) on four thick planks glued side by side. All the details were excavated (not glued on). It was made of caviuna (Machaerium scleroxylon) extracted from a fallen tree. The project was entirely drawn by me. Only hand tools were used (very few) except for the large board sawing and for turning the bedposts. The finishing was done with a personally prepared wax (carnauba, bee’s wax, turpentine, etc.). The total time for completion (2 years) includes many interruption gaps (months). That was the first woodwork in my adult life (28-year-old). At that time my “workshop” used to be the kitchen of my rented apartment in the evenings, when I had to use a rubber mallet in order to reduce the pounding noise on the chisels.
