The plans are one of the “I can do that” projects from Popular Woodworking with a slight modification of a wider back board so that I could carve her name. Wood is QSWO with walnut plugs. This was my first time working with QSWO, it was very brittle. I had a lot more tear out than usual, especially off the planer. Next time I think I’ll use more hand tools. The letters were carved by hand, my first time carving anything. I used a bench chisel and a 7 sweep 14 mm gouge, which I probably didn’t need in hindsight. Thanks for looking.

Nice job! I just made one from the same plans for my kids. I ended up painting mine due to all the tear out. I should have just used hard wood instead of scrap pine!

It’s a nice project and a wonderful gift. I’m sure she must love it.

I was thinking of making a few more out of pine for cousins and coworkers kids. Seems like it might go together a little quicker.

Have your say...
