My daughter got this little toy mole today on her name day.

“Krtek” is made on the lathe from a piece of birch and is about 6 cm high (~2 ’’). The feet and hands are attached to short pieces of black cotton rope glued into the body. The body is painted with Humrol enamel hobby paints.

The Mole (in the Czech original called Krtek) is an animated character in a series of cartoons, created by Czech animator Zdeněk Miler in 1956. Since its inception, the cartoon won itself an enormous popularity in many Central European countries, as well as India, China, Russia and Japan, due its distinct lack of dialogue.

Rock and Roll! Lucky daughter.

Krtek is a big star where I live (Slovenia). We have all of the episodes on DVD and have watched them so many times when my son was little that we’ve got them memorized. Great music too.

The first, oldest, Krtek episode, the pilot so to speak, did have dialogue, but it’s so clear and cute, and watched so many times, that anyone who understands any of the Slavic languages will figure it all out even if they don’t speak Czech.

Now you have to do Krtek’s Russian counterpart, Čeburaška!

I’m 1973. generation. I grow up with this cartoon. One of the best cartoons ever! It was always sad at the begining but with happy end. Awsome project. I’m glad that someone gave tribute to this unrepeatable character.
