Largely because of my poor turning skills, a catch when close to finishing this bowl resulted in breaking off a large chunk. Flattened the larger piece on the band saw and belt sander, did as much sanding as possible on inside, glued on the walnut board, shaped on disk sander, then much sanding starting with 80 grit on a oscillating sander and progressing up to 1000 by hand. 1 coat so far of BLO. Main part of bowl is emerarld ash borer victim with walnut flat added.

That’s a cool save. I will have to remember this. When someone wants a half bowl of ice cream, you have the answer.

Thanks guys. As a former math teacher, I’m calling this a complete set with 1 member and hopefully no more.

Interesting save, nice bowl (if that’s what you call it). I recently had to throw out a (carved, not turned) bowl I made because it cracked quite badly. I had left too much wood close to the pith and also got impatient with the drying. I might have been able to do this, I’ll definitely keep it in mind next time.

This was a cool save.I gotta remember this when I bust apart, I mean, when I execute a “design change” on my next bowl. DoubleDD, there’s no such thing as a half bowl of ice cream; I want the whole bowl filled up.

Have your say...
