Got a load of firewood about 3 weeks ago. Quite a mix of woods including this nice piece of green applewood.
This 9 and one half by 4 and one half piece of apple was fun to turn with my termite. Zipping long strands of wood off was a blast. I haven’t turned any green wood in awhile especially end grain. I thought it would warp but so far it hasn’t. The colors remind me of a Palamino Pony. I put a coat of Waterlox Original after sanding to 220 then 4 coats of wipe on poly knocking off the nibs inbetween coats. Burnt the rings into the top and bottom with a piece of braided steel. Was going to make a lid and finial but the wife wants to put apples in it. How appropriate.

Really pretty, Mike. Glad you’re in the shop. That is appropriate that it will hold apples. Well done.

I guess I’m not the only one pulling wood out of the fire wood pile to make something. I got a load of slabwood last year,it had some nice cherry boards 1×6x24”. they must have been end cuts & I didn’t have the heart to just burn them.

Well thanks Cathy, Barry, Tinnman and everyone, thats the problem Cathy, is coming up with something different.
I’m not like trifern who whips one out every night and each one is better than the last. I’m lucky to come up with one good one out of 20. I don’t like comparing myself to anyone anyway. I just decided to get out and do something or rot. It really is tiring though. I’m not used to working. lol. But Bless all of you anyway. I do appreciate the words of encouragement.

Firewood piles are great sources and the price is right. The wood is always a surprise. You never know what you will find as you turn your blank. I cringe when I go into the local Woodcrafter store and see the prices they are asking for a block of wood.
On green wood. Have you ever tried rough turning it and then “speed” drying it in the microwave oven. Put it in a paper shopping bag and micro until it feel very warm to the touch. Let it cool in the bag and repeat the process until you think the wood is as dry as you want it. What is happening is you are doing the same thing mills do in a steam kiln. The bag holds the moisture in to help balance the moisture inside of the wood with the outside. I check the wood between heating and if I find cracks forming I seal them with CA glue which usually stops the crack.

Nice job Mike. I really like the variations of wood color. I challenge you to make another bowl. This one with the base at least one half the diameter of the rim. Keep on turning!

Well thanks all for the kind words, Les, I don’t know if the wife is gonna let me get away with nuking wood in her new microwave, sounds like it would work though. Thanks Dennis that’s high praise indeed coming from you. Same with you Scott and cabinetmaker. Joe I’m not quite sure I know what you’re asking. A bowl with the bottom half as big as the top. That it??? I think I got one on the lathe something like that right now. All I got to do is get up the gumption and get out there in that 6 degrees and build a fire and get busy. lol. Thanks buddy.

Mike, if your rim or opening is 9 inches, make your base 4 inches. Blend the shape from rim to base so it has a nice flow. Similar to this project.
