I call these my “4×4” boxes, because I created then out of some 4” x 4” walnut stock I had laying around collecting dust. This one is made from walnut (I just LOVE walnut!) and purpleheart.
The process for each was as follows:
1. Mill the 4×4 really rough stock pieces down to four smooth sides and about 2’ to 3’ long / planer & jointer
2. Cut off chunks around 7 or 8 inches in length / miter saw
3. Slice off one edge for a lid / band saw
4. Cut a strip ~3/8” wide vertically out of the front and chisel it out / band saw & chisel
5. Cut out the rough open center section / band saw
6. Smooth out and evenly shape the open center section / oscillating spindle sander
7. Cut a bottom panel and front filler strip to fit and glue ‘em up
8. Sand/trim the bottom and filler flush with the walnut edges
9. LOTS of finish sanding to get That Look
10. Add hinges and finish with clear poly
11. Admire it and drink some root beer

Looks good, Dusty. I too love walnut. It’s easy to machine, doesn’t chip or chatter easily, and just has some of the nicest grain ever! I don’t like the smell when it’s binding on a table saw blade though; stinky. And that rough cut lumber always gives me splinters; ouch.
