The original posting of this bench was on 3/2/12. The bench was 17 years old at that time. Recently I noticed a picture of a glider bench for sale and thought the design of the bench was similar to mine. So I measured, built the cradle from 2×4s with the side pieces double 3/4 pine to support the end tabs that the brackets attach to. The cradle is all mortise and tendon joints and painted (obviously) the same green as the original bench. The cradle has rubber feet to deter the bench walking around the porch. Works nice.

Nice build, Don. Did you have to manufacture the brackets?

Have you any plans for this? This has me thinking of the upstairs back porch. A small two-seater would fit nicely up there.

Paul – this was my own design, but I have seen many that have plans for sale that are very close to this one. I purchased the brackets from WoodCraft.com . Cost was about $30 for a set of four incl shipping. I was going to make my own, but these have bearings on either end making the swing movement smooth plus they are heavier than my homemade brackets would have been. Standard 1/4×20 bolts, 2 1/4 – 2 1/2 long depending on your wood will fit nicely. Thanks for asking.

Not a bad price for the swing brackets. Thanks for the info. Now to fit this into my bucket list for the good weather that will arrive someday. ;)

Really nice build Don. Those gliders are nice sittin outside in the shade or just enjoying the moment wherever you may be while relaxing

Roger – My wife saw this and that how the story goes. Simple build really.
SCOTSMAN – Second picture shows the metal brackets. They are mounted from the top of the cradle to the bottom of the bench feet. The distance between top/bottom holes on the bracket is 7 1/2 inches. That is the swing motion. The swing is nearly horizontal. Its a gentle swing, ideal for a new mom with a tired new born. Since we’re in our 70s it does not apply to us. Dog loves to snooze on it while my wife provides the power.
