Oak Stairway with Secret Compartment

Project by aaronweaver posted 303 days ago 1298 views 3 times favorited 16 comments Add to Favorites Watch

For a few years I have wanted the stairway to match the hardwood flooring I put down. I ripped out the old carpet, and put down hardwood treds and then built the two newel posts, and installed the railings and balusters. It took a few months to complete and I’m glad it’s done now. As a bonus I put in a secret compartment. My son enjoys taking off the top of newel post and storing his trains in there.

i was thinking about this some more. It looks pretty solid, but does it ever sound hollow if someone bumps it?

I cut about 1/4 off of the old newel posts and slid the new ones over the old ones. So it doesn’t really have a hollow sound. The inner compartment is only about 10 inches high.
