Project Information

Ok, I have had this one done since last spring, but it has been really handy and works great.

I love the storage boxes that have a lot of smaller drawers within one cabinet for organizing hardware and other things that normally get lost in the shop. So, I had seven of these things on hand when I started my shop cleanup efforts last year. I couldn't find room to hang seven of them on the wall, so I designed this cabinet. It basically hangs eight hardware organizer boxes in the wall footprint of four.

It it mostly made out of melamine. The door frames are made out of pine, and the panels in the doors are pine beadboard.

Hope you enjoy…

I agree with Wayne about the serious case of envy! I really like the doors. This must be heavy - is it hung on french cleats?

I, on the other hand, have a serious envy of case.

I hope its not over the electrical panel/

Just to answer a couple of questions:

(1) It is attached to the wall with a french cleat across the top. The cleat is lag bolted to studs with 4-1/2" screws (they go most of the way through the studs). Then the cabinet itself is bolted to the wall (I basically use the french cleat to get an easy level and allow one person to hang the cabinet) with 1/4" lag bolts. This thing ain't goin' nowhere.

(2) It is heavy even when empty. I have not weighed it full. I'm guessing close to 200 lbs based on the weight of each of the hardware cabinets.

(3) Yes, that is a shopsmith in the background. It was given to me by a gentleman at church. All I use it for now is the lathe. I am working on getting the bandsaw set up and going (a little at a time). Since I have most of the other tools provided by the ShopSmith the lathe and the bandsaw are probably all I will use on it.

I have seen many plans for cabinets like yours. I have always wanted to build one, but have never gotten around to it. It's on my to-do list. I too, like all the small organizers. It seems like I am always staring at stray hardware when I DON'T need it. French cleat or not, it was probably not so easy to hang by yourself.

I really like this. Our workbench is really deep and with my short stature, reaching the back wall is next to impossible. A system such as this would be very useful in our shop.

Add me to the envy list.

Rob, Very nice work. That is one beautiful cabinet.

I have a question for you on the melamine. What kind of blade is best for cutting this on the table saw?

Melamine seems like an ideal material for projects like this. What type of joints did you use on the melamine?

This solves a lot of problems: where to put everything, ho to keep the dust from getting into everything and how to cover a spot on the wall. That is an awesome cabinet.
