Sugar maple vase

Project by jeffthewoodwacker posted 306 days ago 351 views 1 time favorited 15 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is a sugar maple lidded vase with a walnut finial. Total size is 11’ high and 5” across at the widest point. The lid is also hollowed out to reduce weight.

That’s nice. With that nice finish it almost looks like marble.

jeffthewoodwacker, Wow! What a gorgeous vase. The figure in the wood is just breath taking. I love the symmetry incorporated in this piece, the flaired tulip lip on the top is beautiful. Nice contrasting with the walnut finial and that finish certainly does the wood justice. Is that considered spalting in the sugar maple, or just the natural differenecs in heart and sapwood? Really excellent figuring what ever causes it. Congratulations on a real work of art.

Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis

It doesn’t even look like wood…except for the finial. It looks like some kind of stone…truly beautiful…and exceptional turning.

The Ambrosia Beetles left a great design in the wood and you were able to improve upon what nature hath wrought.

A great design and workmanship. I can see why you are requested to teach classes.

That’s beautiful. My first thought when I looked at it was a Cremation Urn.
