My Mom requested a table to go on her deck. What great timing—just in time for Mother’s Day.
Rick and I rummaged through our stacks of leftover wood and found some cedar to use for the legs and table frame.
We then cut/planed some pine for the table top. This will later be coated with some outdoor treatment (yet to be determined.)
We built the table this morning and delivered it after lunch today. Mom was thrilled.
Wood: Cedar/Pine
Size: 5’ long; 2’ wide; 28” high

See woodworking doesn’t take a long time, does it. Great gift of Love and did you put flowers on it?

Very nice table. How much notice did she give you to make the table?

Great table, Debbie. You are right, though, it does need to be finished—especially if it is to be stored outdoors.
I just finished a maple-topped outdoor table for my wife. It will be stored outside in sun and rain (2 months of monsoon weather). I used 6 coats of spar varnish bought at my local big box hardware store. The can said to use 3 coats, but checking online finish comments let me know that the 6 coats I used willl work better. I used a good-quality brush and sanded between the coats with 220 grit and 600 grit between the last 2 coats.
You can stain it before the varnish, ut you may have to seal the stain with shellac. Check with others when you decide what stain you use. I think it makes a difference it is oil or water based. I am sure wil be able to find an expert here, one you decide on the finish.
Be Blessed!
You already blessed your mother!

thanks everyone :)
Karson, no flowers.
F.L. It took 1/2 day to make, leaving us the other half to get the pool ready for water. Boy was I tired last night!
Diane: Mom asked for a table last week. She hadn’t thought of it as a Mother’s Day present… we just made sure that it was done for this weekend—2 birds/1 stone :)
David: Rick and I are an awesome team. We work together SO well I am always surprised :)
Os/Hawg: the pine isn’t sealed yet but it will be. Mom plans to put an oil cloth over it as well as the sealant. It has been recommended that I use a Water Sealer. Thanks for that help :)
Happy Mother’s Day to everyone and their Mothers!

Debbie,
Thank you for the comments on my projects. I encourage you to dive in and take the risk of just turning whatever you can. When I got my lathe I had a severely broken arm with pins sticking out everywhere. My lathe sat on my living room floor for about 3 weeks until I couldn’t take it any more and had my neighbor move it into my garage. I think I turned every scrap of basswood I had in about 2 days. I’ve had it for about 6 months now and I really love it. I can’t wait to see what you create.

that sounds like quite the break you had, Steffen! Yikes.
I’m looking forward to the lathe. This is Rick’s woodworking dream—lathework and birdhouses :)
Between the two of us, we should have the house full of bowls within the year hahah
