While fishing up at June Lake over the Labor Day weekend, I scored a bunch of Aspen logs. I’d turned Aspen before and had issues with tear out. These green logs were fantastic. Easy to turn and some really interesting figured grain patterns. I finally finished them up in late December. Mugs are pretty easy to turn and are useful later too.
This mug is CA finished and then 6 coats of lacquer. I would have done an oil finish except for the knot. CA stabilized the knot making the turning viable.

Mother nature is funny. She waited for you and only you to find the wood, have the talent to turn it. and to take the time to show it to your friends.
Thanks, Nicely done.

I am amazed you were able to turn the Aspen. That stuff is usually so soft. Nice work on stabilizing it with CA. I think what I really want to know is: did you catch anything while fishing?

That’s a nice project. Unique, beautiful, functional. Nice knot.

I think that Aspen turned well, in part because I started it green. Once it was dry it was all light cuts and stabilizing the knot. As for fishing, my wife caught about a 2 lb cutthroat trout. All I caught were small fry, but we had a good time.
Thank you all for the kind words.

Aspen is usually a very light colored and boring wood but your efforts have transformed it. Nice job working with such a soft wood. Good luck in the contest.

A nice use for some logs and a great design. Mother natures own insulation.
