Here is a box that i built in the Spring of last year… I am actually a bit ashamed to say I “ripped off” the idea. I saw a picture in a book from a friend of mine of boxes, from america, and i fell in love with this design… The one in the picture was round or according to the dimensions given it was round, I just ovaled it a bit because i thought it looked better.
It is made of Ami. Walnut, Pear, and Euro. Walnut burl veneer. The sides are form glued self made pearwood veneer plywood, as well as the front back and drawer fronts, this was especially challenging because I had to design the whole thing from a small picture from a book, from memory, with no looking inside… not so easy as i thought it would be. It helped to have a large vacuum press though!
The 5 drawers are classically guided with pear wooden guides and are all dovetailed. The fronts of the drawers were round making it even harder to cut the dovetails and fit them properly.
I really hope who ever built the box in the book can say i have done justice to his original piece. I did not want to step on anyones toes.

Nothing wrong with borrowing an idea and making your own interpretation. I like the box and the figure on the top is awesome.

Really nice box. I agree that the grain chosen for the top is perfect.

No shame in it. You did a great job. Now, instead of an oval.. try an actual sphere… just kidding.

Great job, and I like that you matched the grain on all the fronts, and like everyone else has said,
( but I mean it more ) the grain on the top is spectacular, nice choice.
