My wife saw these at World Market and asked if I could build them, and of course, I said “Oh heck yeah, that’ll be easy to do…” 2 weeks later and about 60 hours or so into the project, they’re finished and stained a color that matches our office desks.
They’re make from 7 – 2×12’s and were planed and edged and perfected as much as home depot stud wood can be perfected. I hand sanded and beat up the wood prior to staining it and putting a couple layers or minwax semi-gloss poly on it.
I’m pleased with the project and how it turned out for the use my wife has for these 3 pieces. And plus, these have been created to be bomb-proof, so I’m sure as long as someone in my lineage wishes to have these, they’ll be passed down for at least a century, haha!
Here’s the originals seen here – http://www.worldmarket.com/lev/1/Ntt/soho/Ntx/mode+matchallpartial/Ntk/Def/N/0/Nty/1/index.cat

Rob, you just gave me a ‘flashback’ to my college days in the late 60s, early 70s. Nice job. How did youi do the joinery. I’m curious about the center unit with the extended shelving.

Great job. You have done an amazing job with Box Store lumber. I see that they are priced at about $400 for a pair on World Market. Let’s see now, seven 2×12s and only 60 hours of labor.

Rob, Welcome to LumberJocks. Nice project, did a good job of recreating the World Market versions. I bet they will certainly last longer then their versions.

I know Dusty, they all went on sale after I was about midway through the project and almost make me want to pull my non-existent hair out!
Flwoodrat, I made the middle one by first countersinking the screw holes for the outer pieces and then made a shelving type peg system and routed out some horizontal channels on the bottom of the two middle shelves for the pegs to fit into.
If I would have had more time, I would have loved to do some type of extended M-T joints or some sort of non-screw joints.
For the other shelves (the 90 degree parts), I used biscuit joints re-enforced with 3.5 inch deck screws so it’ll hold plenty of books.
