’Yada’ and Working the Wood in 2009
....first project post for 2009 and an old one at that.
I thought I would drag this one up, from my desk and post an old friend who has been with me for awhile now. In thinking about 2009 and all the great pieces of ‘wood art’ yet to come, my mind was drawn back to this one wood piece.
The name of this wood piece is ‘Yada’ and in Hebrew that means ‘to know’. What better way to start the new year off, then to look again at my friend here and once again come to terms with my on-going adventure with wood and the opportunity of art-full ‘knowing’ more about wood. I might also mention that in the coming year, any who follow my blogs or project post will no-doubt see ‘Yada’ quite often, as I have also decided to use him as the one who introduces my pieces of up and coming ‘wood art’ from time to time.
I found Yada out in the woods one day as I was working some trees that were in need of coming down and as I was doing a re-fuel on my chain saw….there on the ground was Yada. You can imagine my surprise and excitement as we both took each other in and that was when Yada spoke these words to me of a quest that he was on….;
Looking For Eve
”.... burthen with a burl,
my heart is enlarged with love,
awakened you call forth….
—by flp
....to these words can I say any-more or can I just add that Yada has said it all!
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Yada; him-self is of the species of wood called rock//sugar maple and his base has also been carved out of maple. I stripped the bark from Yada’s form with a knife and used #120//#220 grit sand paper. The burl, in his mid-section has been carved out some with a gouge and finished with tung oil, while I used orange waxed shellac on his form and also the base.
As for the second middle picture there, well Yada is all-ready showing….some old….some new….and some yet to come….;
Thank you.
GODSPEED,
Frank

Nice Frank. You really pull that stuff off somehow. Mine would look like a stick on a rock.

Stick on a rock. It has a nice sound to it. But Yada is shorter.
Great one Frank.

Cool. Am I the only one that sees a vintage John Travolta pose in the first one? I like it.

Thanks to all;
....for all your comments!
—hello Miles;
....granted it’s granite,
from off of one of my stone walls,
as no-granite can be taken for granted,
while mr yada is out and about….
Thank you.
