Walnut And Oak Passive IPhone Speaker...Just In Time For Valentines Day

Fellow LJ and all around woodworking guru L2L aka “Lee” or simply “The Man” posted something similar a few days back and I thought “now that would make a nice valentines day gift”. Being a master of stealth, I sneaked around and got a tracing of the bottom of the wife’s phone then retreated to the cave. Armed with my hard won slip of paper, I dug through the cutoff cart and came up with some promising pieces of walnut. As I was laying out the design, it dawned on me that some lighter wood for the center block might make a nice contrast so I dug out a piece of oak and knocked this together. We shall see how well it is received…if forced to eat it, hope the finish doesn’t effect the nutty flavor of the walnut…lol

Well, if for some crazy reason she doesn’t like it, you can use it in the shop with your phone

Looks nice to me!

Thanks Joe. Not a bad thought but the droid is made to different dimensions and the speaker is up near the top so perhaps this will make a cool pencil holder…lol

Another fine job by BusterB! I love the look of anything with walnut. The oak adds a nice touch. If you have to eat it just remember, oak is pretty tough, but soldier through, they make dentures every day. Nice job!

Buster, thanks for the kudos buddy but I am not near the woodworker you make me out to be, far from Guru status for sure. I like your design, tunneling the sound through the oak center piece into the speaker chambers. I think your wife will like it or at the very least be fascinated by it :-) One thing for sure, I will bet none of her friends will get anything as unique as this for Valentines day…LOL!! Got to shoot a little video of your boom box in action.

Buster, nice work on the box. The walnut really looks cool. You and Lee gave me an idea for a small portable radio I use in the shop. I wonder if it would enhance the sound if I make a similar box for it? At least you came up with Valentine gift. I’m still in trouble.

Does the speaker actually amplify the sound? I wouldn’t mind making a modified version for my Galaxy, just wasn’t sure if they worked well enough to use up the wood.

-- Phillip- Measure twice, cut onc.... Hey look, it's rustic.

Jeff- Thank you my frozen friend. Glad I didn’t notice how nice the grain in that walnut was…she might have had to settle for a pine one…lol You being the multi talented fellow that you are, could you maybe whittle me a set of dentures if it comes down to that???

L2L- thank you sir. You are one of my hero’s Lee, so deal with it and let’s move on…lol. Not a bad idea with the video but it will be after she actually gets it Saturday. If I do one, will post it to the frugal woodshop Facebook page. The link is www.facebook.com/frugal woodshop

Dave- thank you sir. As always, will look forward to seeing what sort of wooden masterpiece you come up with.

Candy- Thank you mam. I have spent the last three hours trying to remember what movie the squirrel thing is from…was it “up in the air”?

Phillip- thank you for the comment. If you are looking for window shaking sound….might wanna keep searching… But its really pretty cool how this thing amplifies those crappy speakers on the iPhone. Sorta works like the old style cone shaped megaphone. Several videos on YouTube for these things so you can get an idea of how much of a boost you can expect. My son wasn’t impressed with my wooden one since he had made one out of a solo cup for his….lol
