Zebrawood Winged Bowl

Project by jbrinkman posted 304 days ago 610 views 1 time favorited 6 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is a simple Zebrawood winged bowl that I created for a gift to our dog sitter for her 18th birthday. The bowl was buffed and finished with light wax coating.

You can read an article I did on creating this bowl on my blog. This article was subsequently reprinted in the Nov. 2008 NCWT newsletter

The biggest key is to turn at the fastest safe speed. This is probably not a good first project as your “fastest safe speed” is probably not sufficient. After you get a little more experience, you find that you can turn at much higher speeds, which is necessary when doing projects which require “turning air”. I sat in on a Jimmy Clewes demo where it sounded like we were in a giant wind tunnel.

Holy smokes, timing is everything! I just glued up a couple pieces of cherry to make a bowl of a very similar design! While I was waiting for the glue to dry, I thought I would check out my favorite hangout, and I saw your bowl Joe! I thought I had thought of a really unique design (dang, beat out by a couple of hours!!!) Great design and execution! I will post mine in a day or two. I think you’ll appreciate the irony! Thanks, and happy new year, Craven

Craven – I got my original idea from a Bill Grumbine video. I had previously created a square bowl using a different technique which was more awkward, but better suited to my skills at the time. I’ll post a new project so you can see my original attempt at a square bowl.
