This is a headboard for my 8 year olds twin bed. He wanted a Pirate bed, I was able to convince him a real pirate might have something more like this that a bed shaped like a little pirate ship. I also thought this might be more appropriate for him when he’s a teen than a little black pirate ship.

It was build from solid maple, with Mortise and tenon joinery and tongue and groove paneling.

I’ve since painted it with a milk paint/clear poly finish.

Great headboard George. I am in the middle of a toddler bed for my daughter as well. Did you put something behind the tongue and groove panels to support them? Also, how did the milk paint work for you. I’ve read some really great stories. How many coats did it need? Again, very nice job.

Thanks McLean, No, the tongue and groove is about a half an inch thick. I nestled that into 3/8” deep grooves in the posts and the rails, so it set in there pretty securely. I’l try to get some pics up of the final, painted version. I liked the milk paint, it gave a nice rustic, piratey look (maybe too rustic for my wife). Next time, I’ll probably be a little more careful with straining and mixing the small powder lumps out.
