Made from purpleheart and some wood I cannot identify? I got it from a scrap bin from a woodworking shop in Vermont this past summer. Sort of my own design the box is about 7” x 3” high. The top is on a pin that swivels and is held by a rare earth magnet in the lid and a steel pin in the front. I had originally planed on flocking the inside but then discovered this maroon felt. I place small pieces of frog tape around the perimeter of the box body, carefully removed it as one piece and used it as a template to cut the felt – was near perfect!

I actually broke the purpleheart box ring trying to glue the entry cut back, but was able to glue and salvage it – hardly noticeable. I could have done a better job with that joint. Its sanded to 320 and has 3 coats of semi-gloss spray lacquer and 2 coats of Briwax – pretty sure she’ll like it. If anyone can identify the wood species of the top and bottom please do so.

Great box, I am sure she will love it! I am still on the process of making my gift, much simpler than this box though.

That’s a great looking Saint Valentine’s Day box! I like the swiveling top, and the magnetic latching system!
