I got this idea and plan from a New Yankee Workshop episode. I made this as a gift—-I thought the “hidden compartment” in this project would be a perfect place for an engagement ring. It was, but I did have to unwrap it and take it out of the box because this hidden drawer is fairly shallow.
I used cherry, most was “curly cherry.” As for a finish, I found an article in Woodworking Magazine that led me to try boiled linseed oil (cut w/ 1/3 mineral spirits) and 3 coats of spray lacquer. I didn’t have time for the sun or tanning salon treatment (I am planning on trying this for my next project with cherry) but I think it came out great nonetheless.

I like that hidden compartment a lot. What I really find interesting is that it shows how a decorative base like that really changes the overall look of the case. It’s a whole different look if you remove it.
Congratulations! (I assume she said yes.)

This is a really nice jewelry case and you did a nice job on the construction and finish. Suntanning it would speed up the aging process of the cherry but it will do it anyway of its own accord. This is a really nice piece.
By the way with the hidden compartment it qualifies for entry into the contest that is ongoing now. Are you planning on entering it?

Like several, I like your piece, your technique and write-up. But I want the dish on the proposal…
Make sure and enter this one in the contest.

That is a very cleaver design, will have to try and remember it. What is even more cleaver was putting that diamond ring in the hiding place for her to find, always room for more brownie points.
