I needed something to make for my Son-In-Law as a belated Christmas present. I saw these passive speakers on YouTube and thought ”what a cool idea”. My granddaughter liked the idea too and asked if would build her one also. They are made from Maple and Walnut with three coats of clear poly. The boxes are 1/4” thick material, 2 1/4” deep by 3” tall by 7” wide with two 1 3/4” speaker holes. The legs are 5/8” tall.

The Maple speaker is for an I Phone 5 with its protective case. The I Phone speaker is on the bottom of the phone whereas the Android speaker in located on the lower left rear of the phone. The different speaker configurations of the two phones as well as their dimensions determine the slot location and size.

I got to say these were simple and fun to build and they do amplify the sound. Check it out:

What is so fascinating about these is that there is no right way or wrong way to build these speakers. Let your imagination run wild :-)

ralbuck,thanks for the kind words.

tyvekboy, there are so many ways to amplify sound passively getting the biggest bang for your buck is a fun challenge.

Thanks Sean, the passive speakers mellow out the tinny sound of the phones as well as amplify.

Hey Buster, a late Christmas or early Valentines day present, whose will notice :-)

Good one, well, two, or more. It does amplify it a bit. Would be gr8 around a campfire and some cold ones.

Mark, you’re right they are fun to make.

Thanks Tony, I could experiment with the design options of these little passive speakers for a month. They just fascinate me. And you are right, they did bring a smile or two.

Roger, the best thing about these is that there is no wiring involved :-)

Cool speakers and I like the way they look. Also, nice to see an Andriod variety. I love Mac computers but just haven’t gotten into the iPhone.

John, when it comes to phones, I am definitely low tech, like Tracfone low tech :-)

Tom, I painted the inside of the walnut box black to give the appearance of speakers.

Nice design Lee, like little boom boxes. I’m with you on the tech deal. Every time I finally learn something, they come up with new technology.
