On my property I have a bunch of scraggly Valley and Live Oaks. I believe they would both be considered red oak. We get so little rain and the soil is poor that the trees grow extremely slowly. When we first bought the place I cut down a 6” wide weed of a tree and found it was over 75 years old! Every year we get a few limbs that fall down and I can’t seem to burn much of them in the fireplace. With the lathe it’s now taken my wood collection disease to a whole new level. There was no way to avoid the center pith, we’ll see how long it stays in one piece. Had to CA a few cracks the first couple days but I’ve been banging on it for a few weeks and so far so good. It’s certainly dense enough. If it dies on me it can always rejoin it’s brother’s destined for the fireplace.
