This chess set was made for my son Chad for Christmas. The board itself has been in the works for a little under a year. It is made in the David Marks style with 1/4” maple and walnuts squares sandwiching 3/8 birch ply. The edge is made from 2” wide bloodwood, which has turned out to be my favorite wood with the exception of the dust it produces. Makes my wife’s miata a little pink from time to time.
The bottom of the box took a day. I had no choice since my son called and said he’d meet us at the Biltmore for an impromptu one day visit. Had to get it done to take with us. It is made from curly maple, with mitered corners keyed with bloodwood. The bottom is made of 3/8” engineered oak flooring. We’d just finished the floors in the house and wasn’t about to throw out wood scraps that could be used in projects like this later.
The finish is the virgin wood sanded down to 400 grit, and then 3 coats of Briwax clear.

Sorry, nope, didn’t make the pieces. They were found at a toy store for $16, and were perfectly sized. Now if I had a lathe, I might have attempted it.
