As a bunch of woodworkers have been doing, I also redid my shop area from pegboard to a french cleat system. I kept the peg board around in case I needed it for something and as always my wife found a project for it. She asked if I could build something like this.. She wanted something she could see all her costume jewelry quick and easy, but still keep her important stuff in the safe or her jewelry box.
I read how they built theirs and didn’t really like it to much. I built a frame out of 1×4 and made a rabbet for the peg board to sit in. I then brad nailed and glued the peg board in and then placed molding over the top. I filled in the gaps with some putty, sanded everything, tapped off the pegboard and painted it a teal color (her favorite color right now). This allowed the peg board to have the space behind for the pegs and also cover the seam where the pegboard is sitting in the rabbet I then attached it to the wall using you guessed it, french cleats.
