This was a piece of driftwood that I found on a island off the coast of Maine. At first it looked too rotten to be carved, but once I got down below the surface, it was a beautiful pieces of cedar with great warm color. The wood spirit just sort of evolved from the shape of the driftwood. He seemed magical to me and I had fun creating him. His dark blemish where a branch had once been became an integral part of his face. I love the top of his head. He will be hard for me to give up. He’s about 26” tall. He can be seen at

Thanks, Richard. I appreciate your comments. I think seeing the face isn’t that difficult. You should give it a try sometime.
