Pine Plate Rack

Project by Phil Brown posted 942 days ago 479 views 1 time favorited 18 comments Add to Favorites Watch

These pine plate racks were a big seller in my early woodworking years. The idea came from other projects I was building for tole painting classes at a local craft store. I came up with my own design for a country style plate rack designed to display four dinner size plates.

The lighter piece is finished in puritan pine while the darker rack is a combination of layers of stain with a clear sealer in between for an older looking, antique patina. These two projects were hand varnished but spray lacquer became my finish of choice for large runs of product. On some commissions I used tung oil for a nice, soft sheen.

This plate rack from 1988 was one that got put on the wall before I could get it out the door to sell. I have to watch my projets still, as they go missing out of the shop and I find them in a particular room or hanging on a wall somewhere.

Beautiful work as always Phil. Do you make templates to rack (pardon the pun) these pieces out in quantity? Thanks for sharing.

I can understand the missing projects. I have made a few things to show other people and before I know it I have put it to use somewhere in the house.

Yes I use masonite templates for large runs, jigs to hold the shelves in place to fasten to the sides, and different patterns to cut out the hearts. Because the shelves dont come out to the front edges, and blind dadoes being too much work to incorporate into the sale price, I just fasten the shelves with glue and finish nails(then), now brads from the air nailer.

Cool piece Phil. What is the stain color(s)? It is a great looking pattern. If you don’t make them in quantity, maybe you should.

Debbie, my wife just asked me this morning for a roll of copper sheeting to go on the inside of a potatoe/onion bin she’s finishing. I said potaoes dont deserve $300 worth of copper. She says “I”m worth it”. It took a while but she finally agreed to use thin aluminum sheet that I use for punched tin panels on reproduction pie safes. “Whew”, that was close.

Phil, Mate, love your work. I particularly like this one. My wife and I were married in 1963 and our first purchase was a plate rack almost exactly like this one. We decorated out first place in Early American. we still have this and it hangs in my office where she displays some of her favorite glassware.

PanamaJack, the light one is puritan pine by minwax, the dark one with it is puritan pine, a layer of clear sealer, then a layer of special walnut with a touch of red mahogany mixed in.
The imbeded photo is special walnut with no clearcoat.

Hi Don, thanks. These are fun to make and well received.

P.S. Can anyone help me with getting the imbedded photos to the right size. Most of my pics are old photos scanned and posted. I cant seem to get them to the right viewing size.

Very nice design and rack. I would of used one of these as pictured instead of the plates since stuff but no plates.

Now there’s a great idea Dianne. We have small canvases all over the house, on the walls, leaning up on furniture. I should make a couple and let my wife “steal” them to display those small paintings.
