Did this on a Saturday afternoon with my Stepson. He is 15. He picked out a puzzle while we were shopping. It had to do with family. After we put it together (whole family). My wife and I thought it would be cool to hang it up. I glued the puzzle together and set out to make a frame for it. I have a old wooden French door hanging in the room that is getting Black and white pictures of our family placed in each opening. I had some scrap wood floating around in the garage I picked up from a trash pile. It was old fencing. I was going to make some rustic stuff with it. I used a couple of worn out 2×3 white wood fence rails. I ripped them down using one that had cool knots and a finish on them. I had previously pressure washed them and knocked a lot of the silver loose wood off them. The effect was pretty cool. So, I set up the dado blade and milled a rabbit for the glass and then cut the corners. We glued the frame up and did put the glass and puzzle in. Just left the finish as is. I had thought about clear coat or oil, but thought it looked cool as is. I inherited the saw and dado stack from my father as well as the Black and Decker table in the back ground. I was about 8 or 9 when my Mother, Brother, and I bought him that for Fathers day or Christmas. I remember going shopping for it. The cool thing about this project was that everyone in the family had a hand in it. Large or small part.

Okay, I’ll have to say the story is what made this post awesome! It’s great all by itself that you and your family do something together like putting a puzzle together, but then to make it a lasting memory is good stuff! You guys definitely have great priorities!

Thanks…. we try to do family stuff together with the kids every chance we get. They are getting older and we only have a few years left until they are off doing their thing as young adults. I like that they get to help and also see that things can be done by hand and that not everything is “buy, use, and discard”. I like projects where we reuse things or re-purpose stuff. Like the fence material that I pulled out of the trash. I’ve used most of that wood so far. I also, did a mother’s day project with them yesterday for there mother.

Have your say...
