Wrap around tables for sectional couch

As most of my projects happen, my wife asked to me to make something, in this case tables for behind the couch. I got inspiration from “Somethingisdone.com” but built mine a little different as I didn’t think the 1×4s by themselves would be strong enough to hold much. I made the frame from 2×4 and glued and nailed the 1×4s on top. In hindsight I might have went for 1×12 instead but, i think it turned out pretty good. I stained everything, sanded to 220, and did 3 coats of wipe on poly sanding to 220 in between each coat.

What a great idea. We recently bought a sectional and the biggest complaint is that we eliminated having a lamp due to the way our room is. Thank you for the great new project idea.

No problem.. Here is the link where we got the idea from.. We really like it as we no longer have a coffee table for the dog and kids to spill things on..

This IS a great idea! And you’re right, 1×3’s will just end up sagging over time with a heavy lamp or something. I am definitely doing this.

Looks great! I’ve often been tempted to build a similar back shelf for our couch, this looks good and useful

I love it & really need it. Light for reading is a serious issue with our sectional sofa. We have 2 recliners, though. Any thoughts on how they would be affected?

I guess that would depend on the type of recliner is in the sofa.. I have seen some that go back and I have seen some that go more down more than back, if that makes any sense..
