Fireplace install with built in book cases

Project by RipSawRon posted 334 days ago 693 views 1 time favorited 3 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I have been missing in action for a while here on Lumberjocks, and with good cause.
I just finished this project from the floor boards up, it was a test of all my skills from woodworking to plumbing and home theater, with the love of and patience of my wife, good advice of our interior decorator and some help from my friends this has become our favorite room in the house. Our 1924 Bungalow had a gas log fireplace with built in book cases, but it was removed long before we came along, according to our neighbor (who has an all original home just like ours) in the late 60s the village requested that all fake gas log units be disconnected due to CO2 deaths in the area. Lucky for me our 80 year old neighbor didn’t mind me coming over to measure and sketch her fireplace (as long as I brought snacks, of course) she is a delight to visit with and her home is a time machine.

The fire box and logs are a direct vent gas system.

Take care and thanks for looking
Ron

Ron, This is an wonderful transformation of your room. Adding the bookcases to the insert was a good idea. If your wife is anything like mine I am betting it did not take her long to fill them up either. :) I just put in a couple of bookcases in our all weather room and 20 minutes after I finished the install they were filled.

Nice job. This really is a nice addition to the room.

Glad to see you back too, by the way.

Nice work and I’m glad you went to your neighbor’s to get the authenticity back.

Great looking room! You’re lucky to have an original twin home avalaible to you. I’m in the Chicago south suburbs, in a 1920’s bungalow and the “twin” on my block has been so ” updated” you can hardly tell what it originally looked like.
Thanks for sharing
