Yup, it’s a mallet.
It’s been forever since I’ve done anything other than work on the house… had to make something, right?
An exercise in hand plane use, really.
Turned from a piece of 2×2 mahogany, 12 degree angle on the face, and planed a bit of an angle into the sides to match. Inlaid a piece of maple cross-grained to the mahogany (which was doing a lot of splitting along the grain, figured it would be a good way to keep the end together!) with the handle going through the head with a wedged tenon.
Finished with three coats of shellac thinned 50/50.

nice one… I really should make one of those one day… when I have the wood, and the time ;)
how does it hold up to hard-work? just saying cause the handle seems a bit delicate for such a tool – but it could be the camera angle…

Thanks PurpLev! I haven’t used it for anything major yet… but it’s pretty solid. The thinnest point of the handle is where it passes through the head, and that’s a 9/16” diameter hole. It does look pretty dainty in the pictures though, doesn’t it?
I can’t help with the time, but I’ve got some extra 2×2 mahogany that you’re welcome to… You’re local, right?

I’ll keep that 2×2 in mind when I find some time – thanx!
