First of several kitchen mini prep sites (prototypes) I built this week. The next model has a chopping block top (rather than a cutting board) and slightly sculpted legs. I am going to produce variations on this theme with different features slightly customized for each customer. What is neat about these pieces of kitchen furniture is that they are all low carbon footprint, local woods, reclaimed from the recent San Diego wild fire. The piece in the picture has an edge grain blue oak table top and solid black oak support. The top will receive a mineral oil finish and the bottom is pure tung oil.

As my main job is as a chef, I really like seeing these kinds of projects the most. I should really make myself something like this.
Nice Job.

Some nice tables. Do you have a carvewright to do the carvings?

Thank you everyone for your comments on this project.
With this particular series of pieces I am outsource carving. These islands come in a variation on a theme and will be marketed through several sources much like a catalog item. In house we carve, hew, distress and do all of our own finish work, but for this particular line, and in order to offer the customer choices, we collaborate with the carving source.

nice, it would be interesting to see how the mineral oils bring the top’s color to life…
