Birthday Gift. Simlpe Design. Zebra Wood and Walnut. To do it over again, i probably would have gone Darker than Walnut, but i still do like the look.

I think you’ve got a good design going here . I love walnut and as much as i don’t like to stain any of my projects , I have had to stain some Walnut with beautiful grain but weak in color . Also , I was told at Woodcraft that if the Walnut gets much sunlight it will only get lighter with age as opposed to Cherry which darkens over time .
Please see my Walnut clocks that needed a little extra “flavor”

Great design Nic, I love Zebra wood but cannont get it down here in Texas. Have you ever tried ebonizing the walnut. Not with stain but with Vinegar. Try this on some scrap. Take 1 cup of white distilled vinegar and poor it into a glass jar with a lid, then place a 0000 steel wool into the jar and let stand overnight. Then apply this to a piece of sanded walnut and watch it turn a rich black. The advantage of this is the grain of the walnut can still be seen and it stains uniformally across the board. This also works on ASH and OAK. Once applied let it dry and lightly sand agian as the vinegar will raise the grain.

I guess i’ll have to try that Vinegar and steel wool trick someday as well . I’ve heard a lot about it on this site .
