Merry Christmas Lumberjocks!
Hi guys, hope you are all well.
Here’s a Christmas gift for my in-laws. It’s a purpose built table to go in front of their love seat. The idea came from a similar but larger table my mother-in-law saw in a furniture catalog. We modified the dimensions to replace another table that fit perfectly in the space.
My original goal was to make the legs but after making 5 unsuccessfully, I caved and bought 4 legs from a mail order catalog. I found making one good leg is not that tough, but making 4, the exact same, takes a higher degree of patience than I have in me a this time. I also figured if Norm can do it, I can to! :-) Once I had the new legs the rest of the table went fairly quickly.
The table is 32” long, 17” high and 24” wide with the leaves extended. It also has a small drawer, made with through dovetails and a front added. A small brass knob finishes it off very nicely.
As for the finish: First a coat of shellac, then a coat of walnut gel stain, 3 coats of wipe on poly. I rubbed this out with 600 and 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Then as the final top coat a walnut colored furniture paste wax. I love the chocolate color.
The leaves are held up with pieces of 3/4” x 1 1/2” x 8” that swivel in the center on a Kreg screw on each side of the table. This table compliments the TV table I made last year (can be seem in the 3rd photo).
The next project plans are a few small bowls then I plan to tackle a queen ann highboy.

Hi Bob!
Looks very nice. Nothing wrong with buying legs!
After all, isn’t that what we’re doing when we get married? LOL

Bob A in NJ,
I really like the Walnut drop leaf Coffe table. I’m very slow to getting around on this site as it has gotten so big suddenly, I feel like I miss a lot and am wasting shop time-LOL. Your table shows that I’m not wasting my time though! Congratulations on an excellent build, and I’m certain your Mother-n-law was quite appreciative of such a lovely Christmas present. You answered one of my questions in your original post. I can’t imagine trying to make 4 legs all the same on the lathe either as I’m not very proficient with the lathe. I will really be looking forward to following the progress of your Queen Anne Highboy. That is a project that I have in mind as well at sometime, in fact it’s been on the back burner for a long time now. I really like period style furniture. Well good luck with your new under taking and I wish you much success.
Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis
p.s. do you intend to use a set of plans with the Queen Anne Highboy?

Woodbutcher Thanks for the kind words, I’ve already made a low boy, now onto a queen anne highboy, but once I got started, I decieded to make another lowboy. Both the highboy and lowboy are being made in walnut. I have the legs , sides and backs cut our so far. These are great projects to build if you have lots of time and space i your shop. I use plans from The New Yankee Workshop which comes with Video’s of the show. Try one, they are relatively easy to make (the lowboys).
Have fun.
