The hutch is made from mahogany with leaded glass doors. This project was interesting because the customers provided the antique glass doors and I built the case around them.

Very nice, thanks for the post!
What did you finish the new wood with and how did you apply it, I built several Christmas presents out of Mahogany this year and had some troubles with stain, tear outs, and denting because the wood I had was so soft?

Great wrapping job on the two windows. I’d hate to throw that wrapping away.
Nice job.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. It was a fun project.
John: For the finishing I started with pre-stain to help prevent blotching, then used mahogany gel stain (minwax for both), followed by 4-5 coats tung oil. The pre-stain has to sit for a certain amount of time (1/2 hour maybe, check the can) and then the stain is put on over it before it has cured. I just put the stain on with a rag and rub out the excess. I’ll use a brush for corners and hard to get spots, but otherwise it’s all rubbed in.
I usually get tear out when my tools are dull or I’m taking off too much material at a time. I haven’t had particular problems with mahogany, although it does tend to get “fuzzy” if I sand too much. I find that using a scraper works better than sanding.
As for the dents; do you know the trick of steaming them out? Place a damp cloth over the dent and heat it with a hot iron. Carefully – feathering out a burn mark is even worse than a dent! Works well, especially on soft woods. The steam raises the grain and often gets rid of the dent entirely.
Thanks everyone for checking out my project!

Kate,
Great looking hutch! That looks pretty large. Is it all one piece?
That was a wonderful way to show off that leaded glass. Great design.

Hi Lightweightladyleftie,
Thanks for your comments. It was actually two pieces. Couldn’t fit it up a long curving staircase otherwise.
