These are two small boxes made from my firewood pile. The larger box has a spalted maple lid and ebonized body. I used india ink to stain it and it worked well. On a previous box I used black aneline dye on red oak. It turned out a horrible shade of purple. The india ink worked much better.
The smaller box has some spalting and a natural edge on the lid. Both boxes a finished with many coats of thinned wipe on poly and a final wax coat applied with a white 3M pad.

These look like some I’ve seen at Drumm Gallery (Different Drummer shop). The unstained appeals to me, as I really like the details uncovered in the wood—hidden gems in the woodpile. I’d think twice before chucking another log on the fire. You know: “What could this log have become?” Nice work.
