Off centre woodturning

Project by Bob Collins posted 338 days ago 1110 views 1 time favorited 8 comments Add to Favorites Watch

After nine months of wood turning I was looking for some new form to attempt and had a go at doing some off centre candle stick holders. Here are three different shapes I have done. Made half a dozen with coves, then the beading one and finally got a fairly well balanced one with the spaces coves.

Found by a near hit with one flying off the lathe, that the best lathe speed for off centre turning is around 1000 rpm these turnings were done 10cm off centre and even that created lots of vibration.

Interesting candle holders. A good job.

I really love the look of those Bob! How tall are they and what kind of wood? Oh… also the finish you used?? Gotta try that one of these days. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting. Probably a good way to develop your technique for other off center turning projects. I’m afraid my friends might thing I was keeping a bottle in my shop if I made some of those (-;

Thanks for the comments. Correction to above “lathe speed was 1,000rpm not 100, sorry) Your right Les once confident doing these, there is a big wide world of “off centre” turning out there. I thought all good turners had a bottle in the shed, either that or stress pills. Quite a few people have had a laugh at them but I have found them interesting to do and a lot of fun.

Cathy, they are approx 9” high, started with a 3” square blank before rounding, once I was happy with the sanding I applied one coat of Gloss Clear Polyurethan. The wood was rescued from a neighbours shed and I think is Blackwood. Look forward to seeing your projects shortly.

Good looking turnings. One of these days I might get brave enough to try some off center work. I especially like the evenly spaced one.

Very fun! I especially like the center, tapered work. Can you make one with only this style? The simple, same type of lines would really be elegant.

Thanks for the comments. The first one is the worst Bill. specially if you have to many revs. up, but you will have a lot of fun with these, bight the bullet mate and have a go. I also think the evenly spaced one is the better one, did that when I was sober. Joking.
G’day mmh. Now that I am confident I could make one as you suggested, I have had comments that the centre one is several pieces stuck together to make it look like that.
