This is to a Better Homes plan I really like. The wood (except for the plywood panels) is recycled from a futon frame my son left behind when he was done with it—poplar, I think. The first of these (this is the third) had mortise and tenon joints, but pocket screws go much faster with equivalent results. The glass for the shelves was recycled from a coffee table top—re-cut and smoothed at a local glass shop.

Another fine piece of work and the recycling is a bonus.

That’s the nicest futon I’ve seen. Hopefully your son has moved on to MP3’s so he doesn’t claim that this is his futon. Thanks for sharing.

Great project Larry. I too like to recycle wood. I think of it as being “green”. Sally, the boss, thinks of it as being cheap. Keep making sawdust. Jim

Nice project. Nothing wrong with being frugal, or “green”. I try to recycle good lumber from all sorts of sources. Old discarded waterbed frames are typically a good source of pine and oak lumber. Removing the finish can be fun though…

I wouldn’t have thought that you could have gotten results that nice with pocket screws. So far I have used them exclusively for shop and outdoor projects where looks aren’t important. I am going to have to rethink my stance on pocket screws…
