So after inheriting some tools from my grandfather, I decided to make a few things for Christmas. While the first few items were just simple things like birdhouses, I came across coloradoclimber’s wine tilts. Since my brother definitely enjoys his wine, I thought a tilt would a great opportunity to learn how to use the router & bandsaw. After a few prototypes (and mistakes), this is what I wound up with:

For those interested, the angle on the base was 37.5 degrees, but I came to that somewhat accidentally by incrementally trimming the length and angle until it balanced – my prototypes seemed to work with angles anywhere from 30 to 45 degrees as long as the length was adjusted to keep the center of mass over the base. The wood is white oak, and the ‘inlay’ is just thin strips of used wine corks that I cut down with a bandsaw (and a hacked-together little jig to keep my fingers safe). After gluing the cork down, I sanded it smooth with 150 grit paper.

You did good Jeremy, your brother will treasure this. And don’t worry about mistakes, we all have made a lot of them, part of the learning curve.

Thanks all – you’ve got a great community here – glad I can take part!
TraumaJacques: The angle ended up at 37.5 degrees. I started at 30 degrees, and just kept tweaking it on the mitre saw until it balanced. With a rounded over 1.5” hole, I could get it to balance around 33-34 degrees, but the bottle was really jammed in there. At 37 degrees, the bottle has some leeway to be moved back and forth, and seems to handle different bottle types more easily.

This type of project is my last minute Christams gift goal for tomorrow so I really appreciate you saving me some trial and error with your angles. Thanks and Merry Christmas.
