After my basement flooded in summer 08, I decided to refinish the way I wanted it from the start. In other words, a showcase of curly maple! After completely refinishing the basement (beefing up my homeowners insurance, and adding an additional sump well/pump) I added this mantle/shelf opposite the pool table to hold accessories and drinks for entertaining guests. Believe it or not, I found the piece of wildly figured crown molding at Menards, and walked out feeling like I’d stolen it. The top is some laminated strips from other projects. Finish is BLO 2 coats followed by 3 coats of gloss polyurethane.

We’ll be right over during the bowl games. I hope you have a big TV, lots of snacks, and lots of cold beer!

All I ask is that you guys use a coaster. Beer is for summer, whiskey for winter.
