Here is one i built a while back. The Chess board is constructed of purple heart and curly maple that was resawn on a table saw….Such a waste. After that I tried to flatten the glue up with my first attempt at hand planes on such a large surface, it actually went quite well, but still ended up running through my drum sander to get the finish to match better between the maple and purple heart. have to admit, I bought the Maple crown molding to build the frame as well as the chess pieces. The shelves are made of .25 Plexiglas and are set in dados in the shadow box casing.
It does take a different perspective to play the game with the non-square board. Just more of a challenge

Very nice build! This has been on my “To-Do” list for quite a while!

Awsome game, especialy when you are challenged to change your point of view, not to mention your oponent actualy stands beside you, not in front .
