This is a bed that was completed on December 20, 2008. This belongs to the same customer that bought the White Euro Murphy Bed (see http://lumberjocks.com/projects/12131). The center section is real similar, besides being different sizes, The bookcases on this one has doors on them. The customer requested more of a knotty look to the walnut, but that was hard to find. Most of the plywood that you find is very expensive and clear.
The door glass has a film on it that is applied like window tint. It is designed to resemble venetian blinds. The back is removed off the film and you spray it down with soapy water to deactivate the glue. You then put it on the glass, trim it and squeegee the water out. Here is a video of one that I did in the past. It is not a commentary video just one recorded from my live feed. (see http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/887122) For this reason it may be long and boring.
The finish is just a clear coat on top of the walnut wood. The last project I used walnut I stained the wood to make it darker and more even (see http://lumberjocks.com/projects/10007). I love the natural look even better. This is the first large project where I used walnut and I loved working with it. It seemed a little softer than the oak and maple that I usually work with so it was easily shaped and sanded. I hope to do more projects in walnut in the future.
Here are some building pictures:

Chris, this is simply gorgeous. I really like the look of the this bed. Walnut has such beautiful color and grain that the natural look with its inherent “imperfections” is really the way to go in my opinion. Like cherry, walnut has it own inherent beauty. The beside trays and window treatments add some eye catching details to the piece. I can well understand why this is a repeat customer.
Well done!!
