Our home came with a 3 1/2 inch deep mantel. Yeah. Pretty lame. Wifey wanted one deeper, so I obliged. This is made from poplar (so that hooks will hold) and MDF baseboard and crown. I tore the old mantel off, built a box to mount the new 8 inch deep top, and trimmed out the box. Painted with Rodda trim paint (matches the builder spec so will match the trim perfectly). Used my little critter sprayer (the cloud maker).
Wifey likes it.

WOW , This is very nicely made ! Did you make all of the profiles as well ? The paint job is sweet : )
ps: who gets to install the hooks and destroy that pristine look ?

The hooks are already there, they are hidden underneath in the reveal, I installed them before I put up the mantel. There are 9 of them, evenly spaced. Wifey already has stockings up ;)
