My first attempt at cutting boards. I hit the lumberyard and found some nice “special” hard maple for 3.49 a board foot. I took out of there two boards about 10 ft in length x 4”w. The two boards were slightly different shades. It ended up being about 6 brd ft. Anyways. I dragged it with me to school and put it through the table saw so I could get some nice even strips. Then I cut the strips into 12” lengths along with some strips of Padauk and Walnut I had laying around that I also cut into 12”lenths. I glued them up into the nice colored stripey boards then started glued up all the wood I could into boards (the lab was open and no one was watching so I used up almost all the clamps in there) The next day I went back, unclamped em and ran them through there at 80 grit. I ended up with about 6 boards so far. I even made all the short scraps into boards. I routered the edges after I took these pictures. I am still sanding and finishing them but I felt like posting this up for now. The two stripeys are getting the most OOHs though. Eventually these will be Christmass gifts.

I have been using just pure mineral oil on mine.

I used walnut oil on the ones I just made. Someone said it is the only natural food-safe oil that hardens, so it does not require retreatment as often as mineral oil.

I would love to see the final pics. Did you take any? Those are excellent boards, you have an eye for quality appearance.

I used a mineral oil finish on them in the end. My oldest daughter was clogged up so I needed to buy some anyways. I’ll try to take some pics and get them up this week. I sent the unfinished photos to my stepdad and he is in awe of them. Good thing they are getting one of them for Xmass. I also made him a nut house like the one on here so I’ll have to get photos of that up too.
