I saw Bill Hall’s shaving brush project and decided that I needed to make a few of these. Maybe as Christmas presents, or more likely St. Patrick’s Day presents.
I glued up some walnut, purpleheart and hard maple into inch and a half square pieces about 8” long. I cut the first one 2 1/2 inches long and drilled my recessed hole for the silvertip badger hair knot. Now the fun part. I don’t have a lathe so I used a rasp and a drum sanding wheel on the drill press to shape this brush handle. The images of the brush handle after being shaped just have some mineral spirits applied and the knot has not been epoxied in place yet. I have now finished it with oil and plan to add several coats of wax finish. This would be a little easier with a lathe but I had fun with it and I’m slow no matter how I make a project.

That’s a pretty nice non-turned turning, and a pretty slick project. Where did you get the badger hair?

I you have a drill press, you have a lathe…sort of. Dowel center acts as the tail stock with the drill as the head stock. Mount your stock to be turned, align a steel rod or even a dowel next to your turning to act as the tool rest, and go for it. You would be suprised at how much you can get done this way. You can even use a rasp as the tool if you can slow it down enough. Lathe tools work better.
For a demo in a speech class years ago, I used a battery powered drill as my headstock and a nail through a board as the tail stock. Used a hose clamp to hold the drill down and went to town. A fun project and it probably did not take 20 minutes to fix the thing.

Very nice. I have not seen one of these in about 25 years. What are the dimensions of the handle?

Thanks for the posts. I bought the badger hair knots at The Golden Nib. Todd – Thanks for the offer, but I don’t sell them, just going to make a few for the whiskered folk in the family. John – Thanks for the tip on turning on the drill press, I may have to play around with that for the limited amount of turning that I’m doing. No country style french table legs on my drill press.
cpt_hammer – In Montana, we have badgers as indoor pets. I just have to collect it out of the vacuum.
ganders – The dimensions of the handle are 2 1/2 inches tall by 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The silvertip badger hair knot was a 24mm size, which a 1” forstner bit worked well for the inset for the knot.

Rock on man! I like your design. I may have to make my next one a little more like yours. I like the “racing stripe.”
