Cedar is such a pretty wood and this piece shows it remarkably well.

Now that I’ve actually tried turning, and knowing that cedar can be rather tempermental, did you have any particular problems turning this?

Joe, once more you have produced a beautiful piece. I have to agree with Russel that cedar is such a gorgeous wood and once again this one has “turned” out well.

Out of curiosity is there any reason for switching to shellac as a finish? If memory serves me (and it has let me down on more than one occasion) you normally spray lacquer. Just curious.

That’s a beauty. Cedar has a lot of good and bad points for working. That’s one of the good points. Beautiful job.

When you said Red Cedar , did you mean Aromatic Red Cedar ? That’s what it looks like in the pictures anyway . Great job on the turning . The grain is beautiful , Joe . Happy Holidays to you : )

Mike, I never tire of compliments.

Russel, sharp tools, a light touch, paying attention to the direction of my tools and some sand paper overcame the problems that cedar presents.

Scott, I used shellac simply because I did not have enough spray lacquer for the vase. I did not want the discoloration of poly. I had shellac and it is clear, dries reasonably fast, and leaves a nice finish.

MMH, my shop stills has the cedar aroma permeating.

Rikkor, I have been selling a few pieces. I have also donated several pieces to local, worth while charities. I plan on doing several art shows this spring and summer. After my skills improve, I plan on contacting several galleries throughout the US. Make me an offer, I would love to adorn your mantle.

Dusty, it probably is aromatic red cedar. I was not paying close enough attention to the person who gave it to me to remember. I was leery of turning cedar because of it’s inherent issues. I am pleased with the outcome, though.
