I saw frames that were like this at a store the other day and I decided to try my hand at one. In the camera store, the inner mat is made from traditional matt board, I thought it would look good in wood.
This frame started life as an oak drawer front (actually I assume it started life as an acorn somewhere) that my friend gave me. He had mismeasured it and had to make a new one. I routered out the raised panel preserving the slot that the panel sat in. I also had some 1/4 inch thick maple that I used for the new panel.
I went to the computer, found a font that was thick enough to allow the spaces to be used for picture holes, printed it out, traced it onto the new panel and cut it out on the scroll saw.
I slid the new panel into the old slot and there you go. I imagine you can use any word you would like, but I liked Love because it is an awesome word… and it had lots of open spaces for pics.
The second photo is what the frame in the store looked like.
