Portable Beer Engine Bar

Project by Duane Kohles posted 1165 days ago 2610 views 5 times favorited 7 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I was asked to design and build a bar that had a classic “english pub” feeling for a local resturant/brewery to accomodate their monthly “beer events” in which they highlight a certain type of beer. The dispensing of the beer is what makes it special and required this bar. The beer engines you see are the tap handles on top, and they work on the principle of a siphon versus the modern methods of using CO2 to dispense the beer. The result is a very creamy and smooth beer. Very delicious, but that is another story.

The bar itself was a fun project it, incorporated a lot of different aspects and challenges. Raised panel construction, corbels and brass railing in the front, as well as the dovetailed drawers on the inside that hold the special kegs of beer designed for the engines (siphons). For optimum taste results the kegs have to be kept cool, therefore we needed a way to hold ice water for a circulation pump. I fabricated the black metal tray you can see in the right keg tray.

Great project and I love the details – Form meets function.

Hey Duane: This is a wonderfully nice bar. Your attention to the details is obvious. I had to quit drinking the beers several years ago, too many bad experiences, but I can sure appreciate the craftsmanship on this piece, and I know that the bar tender loves showing off their unique and special tap. Learning the mechanics and making this thing operate, while worrying about water, beer, and wear and tear would have been overwhelming to most of us. It is one thing to make something beautiful, and another thing to make it beautiful and functional. You have achieved this.

Nice bar Duane. I like the way you have the keg holder set up to hold the keg on its side, certainly makes it a lot easier to load the keg in there. Great design!

I love it. Now I have to learn all about siphon systems for beer though. Any links appreciated.
